Duterte Admin Plans to Build Iloilo-Guimaras-Negros-Cebu Link Bridge

President Rodrigo Duterte's administration plans to build bridge linking Negros Island Region, Cebu, Guimaras, and Iloilo which has been a long-standing dream of Visayans. This was announced by Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) during a press briefing on Thursday November 3.

According to PCOO, the major infrastructure agencies of national government, including National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), Department of Transportation (DOT), Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA), are talking and coordinating for the first time in the history to increase infrastructure development in the country.

The PCOO also said that the infrastructure plan will increase the employment rate, will reduce the cost of living, will solve the worsening traffic condition, and will develop good public transport system.

Public Works Secretary Mark Villar told the reporters that the construction of $1-billion Iloilo-Gumaras-Negros-Cebu link bridge will begin next year. He also said that the 10-kilometer bridge which is the "most ambitious" of its kind will replace San Juanico Bridge that links Samar and Leyte as the longest bridge in the Philippines.

The government appealed to public to be more patient as the massive infrastructure overhaul will cause inconvenience and will require "passion before resurrection," said Economic Planning Secretary Ernest Pernia.
